Charged particles continuously streaming from the Sun (solar wind) interact with Earth's magnetosphere. This interaction alters the ionosphere structure and causes shifts in Schumann resonance. Solar wind speeds of 400-700 km/s are considered normal.
Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) release large plasma clouds from the Sun. When they reach Earth, Kp index can spike to 6-9 levels. During these periods, Schumann frequency can shift by 0.1-0.3 Hz and amplitude can increase by 50%.
The Sun has an ~11-year activity cycle. During solar maximum (around 2024-2026), CME and sunspot activity peaks. More anomalies are visible in Schumann data during these periods. Solar minimum returns Earth to calm conditions.
NOAA SWPC and ESA publish 1-3 day solar storm forecasts. These predictions can be used to preemptively identify Schumann anomalies. For live tracking we recommend the SRL Kp panel.
During strong geomagnetic storms: GPS accuracy drops, satellite communications may be interrupted, power grids can experience overload. Biological effects are also reported — especially cardiovascular events may increase 5-10%.
